Letter received by parents of existing Chelmsford County High School pupils today confirming that the school will admit an additional form of 30 girls from September 2015.

Wondered if Aang has any views as to what I/C score might be now for a March offer, in view of extra class of being added from September. If anyone is able to contact Aang, would be very grateful for his/her views.

Think KEGS have said they will take 120 I/C and 30 O/C. Wonder if CCHS will take similar decision?

If their admission info still says that the first 80% go to IC candidates on score then to anyone in score order, then the first 120 places will be ring-fenced for IC. The way that it has been worded, the remaining places are actually 'open', rather than OOC, I think. (For the 4 Southend Borough grammar schools, 'up to' 115 / 125 places go first to IC and the rest to OOC, which is why the 30 additional places at SHSB - as far as I am aware - all went to out of catchment applicants even though there were boys on the in-catchment waiting list).

This post summarises my attempts at trying to analyse the limited information on CEM results. The Admissions Office at CCHS has not been helpful with my request for some basic information, unlike the CSSE office. Hence I have no actual facts to use, but can only extrapolate based on the limited information in the CCHS letter and some of the scores and cut offs for 2014 entry and 2015 entry posted in this forum.

Some key points, best taken with a large dose of salt:
1. I believe the CEM test scores are standardised with a mean score of 100

2. The distribution of scores is broadly normal, but is skewed towards scores being slightly below average offset by a small number of very high scores

3. The range of scores for 2014 entry was 50 to 143 and for 2015 entry 66 to 138. This is not to say anyone necessarily scored 66 or 138, but those were the minimum and maximum scores theoretically possible

4. Working backwards and trying to match the proportion of scores in the top bracket, statistically speaking the standard deviation for 2014 entry was 10.7 and for 2015 entry 12.6

5. Assuming the cutoff score for in catchment place in 2014 was around 107, this would have been around rank 200 out of 848

6. Extrapolating 2014 into 2015 means that a in catchment score of 108.5 would result in a rank around 200 and should be sufficient for an offer.

7. Announcement that 2015 September entry expanded by 30 pupils means an in catchment score of 107.00 would be ranked around 232 and should now result in an offer.

8. For reference, an in catchment score of 106.00 would be ranked around 254 and, notwithstanding the crude assumptions above, would represent the minimum possible successful score
