What magazines/journals does your Grammar/Indie school have?

Post by 2Girlsmum »

I've just been appointed as librarian at a school which has no current journal titles, as the previous librarian didn't renew them this year. I have a good idea of some - Business review, The English Review, Geography Review, PE Review, Economic Review, Wired magazine, BBC History Magazine, but I'm not sure about Media, French or Spanish. Any librarians/teachers out there who could suggest titles?!

Don't they have the New Scientist at schools any more? I remember reading the 'funnies' on the back page and persuading myself I'd done some background research in the olden days...

I might try a quarterly sub to New Scientist, but it would cost £180 pa, and I'm not sure how popular it would be. Allons-y appears on the US Scholastic site but not the UK one. Do the parents pay for it? It's $7.99 per child.

Parents can choose to pay for it through the school but I guess there will be those who can't afford it.

Had to pay for an Allons-y subscription ourselves for my son but he didn't feel he gained anything from it - his opinion was it was a silly magazine, more suitable for girls rather than boys. He really likes French and is taking A level so it wasn't the language itself that was the problem. No idea if there's anything better for languages I'm afraid.

Wondering, why it costs £5 ($8) in USA, but £16 in UK?
