Practice papers for SET

Post by Success999 »

Hi,
Can anyone please suggest me some practice papers which are similar to SET?
I know it is maths and English multiple choice. GL, Alfa are they good?
Many thanks.

I think for SET are GL assesment papers and bond multiple choice in English and Maths are good. First past the post papers were also very helpful.

I would certainly make sure you do some Cloze practise. I had never come across them before and I got the impression they formed quite a few marks in the SET.
My dd didn't feel there was anything significant in it that hadn't been covered at school ( other than Cloze) but found the time a bit pressured. She had friends who didn't get through who almost certainly got their answers out of sync so practising that is really important.
Also good to remember that once you get the SET results there is only a few days before the written parts so make sure you practise for those and don't just focus on the SET.
We stopped work about a week before the SET and didn't do anything else before the written papers which I think helped ( although we did work pretty hard during the summer).
Best of luck

Thank you everyone for your advice and suggestions I really appreciate that.
Now a days I keep worrying whether we are doing enough or not. I think this is one of the cons of DIY. One more question - in the cloze do they give word bank or children has to write their own words?

Hello there,

Congrats for all those got places and good luck for those in waiting lists,

Thanks for Ladymuck and others for giving brilliant info on 2013 SET, however if any one can shed a bit a more information on 2014 SET, it will be very helpful. I assume children goes completely blank without knowing each year how SET is done.

If we want to give a home made mock SET, what would be the content recipe for english and maths -Appreciate any thoughts!

for instance, english- approx 70 questions for 45 min

2 comprehension ( is it A4 reading page each with how many mc questions)
1 cloze passage (around 15 questions)
synonym/antonym/homonym (approximately how many)
SPAg ( what is expected., e.g. is it as we see in KS2 SPAg tests, if so how many and whether it
is a level5-6)

Maths 50 questions-45 min ( known from Ladymucks post)
Would it be better giving problem solving multistep ones ( i assumed these kind goes with individual school tests) or singe step problems covering mainly numbers or is a mixed element from all major maths headings like Numbers, data handling , shapes and measurement. For instance,
30 numbers topic ( mainly -fraction , %, decimal with all operations)
5 shapes
5 data handling
5 measurement
5 sequences

Sorry for the long and puzzling questions.

Any ideas or thoughts would be much appreciated.

Thank-you

The 2014 SET consisted of:

Maths – 50 Qs in 45 mins
English – 70 Qs in 40 mins (including reading the comprehension passage)

Hope that helps. To prepare, we did Bond online, SATs papers, Manchester Grammar School, other indie papers, etc. And for exam practise, you can't beat the SGS Mocks organised by the PTA.
