Habs Vs NLCS

Post by NLMum27 »

Hi all,
I know this topic comes up every year, so I have read all the past year's posts. However I just wondered whether any parents of either of these schools have anything else to add on the relative merits? Or anyone else who is making this choice? If anyone has a child at both that would be particularly welcome!
Thanks

This forum is great. Thanks for all the posts, they've been very helpful.

Dd has offers from both Habs and nlcs and I'd be very interested to hear from people with experience of both schools too.

Thanks!

Surprised to know that Habs girls have posted the offered already. Have not heard anything from Habs boys yet, during interview we were told that the offer letters will be posted on 19th

idiemom - I think that Habs girls and boys run their process separately. The girls school had to send out their results earlier to align with other consortium.

Ours came yesterday, I believe they were all sent Friday, so the rest should be there Monday. That's just girls though, the boys work to different dates.

St Albans and Habs boys are different schools to the girls schools. All the girls schools have now now sent out their offers. DG

We are in the same position - trying to decide between two great schools. Any further views would much appreciated.

I've posted my observations previously. You might try Xenia on Mumsnet. She had a girl at each school some time ago. Things at Habs have changed with the new Head- much gentler than under the previous who put us off applying at 4 entirely.
I think there are some obvious differences-
Habs has boys next door and they share the coach and some activities vs NLCS has some activities with boys' schools but socialising is out of school
NLCS has a choice in 6th form of A level/PreU or IB vs Habs only offers A Levels (yes, you need to think this far in advance)
Habs has a more rural setting and very limited access by public transport vs. NLCS is accessible by tube in addition to the much broader coach network
Sub/Exurban Herts feel at Habs vs. A more Londoncentric pupil population with girls coming from as far away as Kensington and Islington at NLCS
Habs feels more Traditional (IMO) vs. Very relaxed and informal at NLCS
NLCS has really good food vs Habs will have better food when the new dining hall is built ( silly criteria alert!)
Both have great facilities and acres of grounds. Both do very well with exams and uni destinations (NLCS does better but it is really splitting hairs). Both will probably have a critical mass of girls from your area (unless you are south of Highgate/Hampstead in which case, Habs won't). Both have amazing sport, music and extra-curricular.
Go see them both again with an eye towards who your DD will/could be in 7 years time. Think about the journey. What if DD misses her coach? Does your DD enjoy something that is offered by one but not the other?Talk to older girls at the schools and ask what they like or don't like about both. Flip a coin?
