GCSE's 2017/ 2018
Does anyone know how the GCSE's are meant to be different for those DC's sitting them in 2018?

Here is the 'spin' ..
For actual syllabuses look at exam board websites for more details.

Re: GCSE's 2017/ 2018
Hi,
There are lots of changes. Here are some key points:
• Grades re-numbered – 9 is to be the top grade and 1 is to be the lowest (except for U). There is to be more granularity at the top end and less at the lower end. So what is now A or A* will be 7, 8 or 9. What is now C or B will be 4,5 or 6.
• Changes will be made to Maths, English Language and English Literature in summer 2017 (affecting current year 9 and younger) and other subjects in summer 2018 (affecting current year 8 and younger.
• Reduction in continuous assessment – wherever possible 100% of the marks must come from formal examinations sat in the same exam season. Obviously not all subjects can be assessed entirely by written exams.
• Subject-specific changes to make them “better”; e.g. in Maths (my area of interest) more problem solving.
• Exams in summer only; no winter exams. The only exceptions to this are for Maths and English Language where candidates who were 16 by the previous August can take these in November.
• International GCSE will not count towards the school’s statistics. This change is being phased in on a subject-by-subject basis and is already in effect for English Language.
• Maths will count double (i.e. as 2 GCSEs) to the school’s statistics because so much more content is being added. NB – it only counts as 1 GCSE for the student. It is not clear which subjects will suffer because of the increased teaching hours needed for Maths; it’s also not clear where the extra Maths teachers will come from.
There is a thread “new Maths GCSE” which includes some more information.
I hope this helps.
