Maths Problem

Post by Guest250 »

These questions are from Haberdashers 2006 maths paper.

A fir tree, which is 100 centimetres tall, is planted on 1st January 2004.
During 2004 its height increases by 10%. The tree then has a growth
spurt and its height increases by 20% during 2005. How tall is the tree
on 31st December 2005?

The total cost of one ticket from G to J and one ticket from G to I is £1
The total cost of one ticket from G to J and one ticket from H to J is £1.20
The total cost of one ticket from G to J, one ticket from G to H, and one ticket from I to J, is £1.30.
What is the cost of one ticket from G to J?

GJ+GI = 1
GJ+HJ = 1.20
GJ+GH+IJ = 1.30

Therefore 3GJ+GI+HJ+GH+IJ = 3.50

also, gj = gh+ hj and gj=gi+ij

Therefore we have 5GJ = 3.50 then gj=3.50/5 = 70p

end of 2004 the tree will be 110cm.
then growth of 20% in 2005 will add 22cm to the tree.

Therefore the total growth will be 132cm.

I think I remember SJ355 posting answers to a Habs paper. Does anyone know where to find this? Or is anyone able to post any answers to the Habs papers?
Many thanks
