Watford boys waiting list movement

Post by Back2Back »

My ds is on waiting list position 14(outer catchment). I was wondering if there was any realistic chance of him getting a place in Watford boys or we should just give up and resign to choice provided to us.

Same question. Mine is WL no. 6 (inner Catchment). What are the chances?

Compare how far off the cutoff you are with the fall in the cutoff between March and September in previous years, as found in the statistics sticky at the top of this section.

DS is 245. Academic cut off this year was 247! Although the Sep cut off goes down a couple of marks most years, it is not a true indication of the chances as the number of boys in each mark zone could vary year to year. I just wondered if anyone had any idea on trends. What sort of movement in terms of numbers is usually expected?

as posted in answer to similar question on clement danes, my dd got in to wgsg from 9 on inner catchment academic list but that was 2 years ago and I got feeling more movement than usual plus very small year and first year of the new system where you knew the results. Rational would say that there would be less movement if you knew the results as you would only apply to schools you wanted and had chance of getting in, but maybe more as children using the grammars etc for practice for independent tests and applying on the off chance they dont get offered places/ scholorships for indies. so sorry not much help.
of note we didnt get a place until end of april and 2nd run of CI list

That's useful. Thanks for sharing Mgnmum. Any others with similar movement stories from last year?

2005 | 2006 | 2007 | 2008 | 2009 | 2010 | 2011 | 2012 | 2013 | 2014 | 2015 |
Mar Sep | Mar Sep | Mar Sep | Mar Sep | Mar Sep | Mar Sep | Mar Sep | Mar Sep | Mar Sep | Mar Sep | Mar |
----------+-----------+-----------+-----------+-----------+-----------+-----------+-----------+-----------+-------
221 219 | 231 229 | 240 234 | 239 238 | 247 246 | 244 239 | 243 239 | 240 238 | 242 239 | 255 253 | 247 | Watford Boys (inner)
241 234 | 251 242 | 250 241 | 257 247 | 257 249 | 253 252 | 254 247 | 253 248 | 252 250 | 260 256 | 256 | Watford Boys (outer)

This is the extract from the admission statistics sticky. Two scores in the bracket represent the cutoff score in March and then finally in September. Last year the score offered in September was 4 marks less than September whereas in 2013 it was just 2. My DS has 252 score and the cutoff was 256. I really can't tell whether the September cutoff would follow last year's pattern or the year before.

Hi Back2Back

You have the data already and have seen that the score drops vary from 1 mark to 9 marks in the past 5 years. The fact you are 14th with a score of 252 and a current cutoff of 256 tells me there are probably around 3 DC per mark.

I would say you possibly have a shot but it is a very long shot. Your best chance lies in the fact that most outer catchment will have other options and you must hope they choose those options. The biggest change normally comes in the first shakeup as everyone confirms their choices.

If it was me I would wait until the 2nd run and make my mental decision then. If you move to top 2 after that then worth keeping hopes alive but anything further down the list I would cut my losses and accept the selection you have.

movement occurs after the 1st run for those who have made up their mind re private and state, however there will be further movement at second run as often the scholorship awards are not made until after Easter, so after the 1st run. my dd year we moved from 9th to 4th after 1st run and then got place ( along with 2 below us) on 2nd run,
