Can anyone help with a transport query for JH?

Post by Laughingmum »

Hi there, :D

I know this is going to sound bizarre...but wondering if there are any kids out there travelling to JH from West London Ealing/Greenford Area? DS has a place but the logistics are worrying me as I also need to ensure young DS is also ok to get to school on time. I really would appreciate any feeback and also just to see if there are any families who are travelling in to John Hampden from 15+ miles and how they finding the journey.
Thank you in advance.

Oh dear. Didn't you look into this before applying. This is not a journey a child could do for 7 years. Sorry.

Surprisingly, this isn't actually that ghastly a journey.

A couple of stops on the underground from Greenford to South Ruislip, change to the train and he would be in Wycombe within 35 minutes. (There's a gap in the connecting trains - the actual travel time is only 20 minutes.)

He would then need to catch a bus up the very steep hill to the school, but I assume they run very regularly, and the journey would only be a few minutes to cover a mile and a half. Probably around 50 minutes travel time in total.

Although we are often harbingers of doom on here when people propose such journeys, this one could have a happy ending, because it would also allow him to socialise close to school.

I'm afraid that I do agree with scary mum though. Did you not consider this before you applied for the school and put him through the 11+?

That journey up the hill is not a few minutes .... it's a long slog in the morning.

OP, please try it on a school day and see how long it take to get to school on time.

Also partly depends if it is Ealing or Greenford - Ealing to Greenford would take a while in the morning too.

I found a route involving three buses, a train and a tube journey. I don't know West London at all well, so I'm hoping that I didn't accidentally choose the OP's actual starting point.

Isn't High Wycombe a very nice place to live in?

I suppose it depends on one's definition of 'ghastly', especially when one is 11. Assuming he lives next door to the tube station in Greenford, and the trains run on time every day, and ditto the buses...

Thank you for all your replies. Appreciate the view had we thought about this before hand...there was a move on the cards which unfortunately did not come through and getting a place was by a long shot as did not even think we would get it but put it down as one of the choice on CAF. Drove up the other day and door to door was 30 min - perhaps on a good day...and return journey was the same...fluke or reality - we still looking at possibility of the move happening but understand it will take some time and best to look at all options in the meantime for travel. I understand should the move happen later even next year (not ideal) we can apply for place if there is one. Any other feedback moms/dads have on JH? Thank you in advance for all your replies.

Was that in the morning rush hour? The times I've had to go to High Wycombe have all been horrendous - the Handy Cross roundabout (M40 junction) is often grid-locked which impacts on the whole town. Marlow Hill is notorious with three secondary schools in close proximity as well as the hospital.
