Travelling to St Olaves by train - railcard? Zip/ card?

Travelling to St Olaves by train - railcard? Zip/ card?
Hi - Mrs SydenhamDad here as I can't remember my log in! 
DS starts at St Olaves in September, and will be getting there by the Sydenham Hill to Orpington train. I hadn't investigated travel cards/ Oysters/ zip cards too closely, but it's time. A friend's daughter goes to Newstead Woods on the same train, and she said they have found the Oyster card cheaper than a rail card. Just wondered what people in similar situations are doing?
