Train question doing my head in!

Post by Bob1892 »

Can't seem to get to the answer of 10:50
The qs is:
Station A is 40km from station B.
A train leaves from station A at 10:00 & travels at 30km/hour toward station B.
At what time will it pass a train travelling at the same speed from B to A, which left at 10:20?
TIA

Well I might start by asking where train 1 has got to by the time train 2 starts out :

@ 30km/hr it will have gone 10 km in 20 mins.

So the trains will now be 30km apart - consider this to be a new starting point

Both travelling at 30km/hr means they will reach the halfway point (15km) in 30 minutes

ie at 10.50

First train leaves at 10. By 10.20 will have gone 10km. At that point 30km apart heading towards each other at 30km an hour. They will meet after 15km. This would take 30 mins. 10.20 plus 30 mins is 10.50.
Ps. Hubbie did this, can't take credit!
