is there any statistics ?

how many appeared for Essex exam and how many places we have and also for Woodford county the competition is high and we have 180 places but how do we know the ratio of number of students appeared for the exam this year?

For several years up to and including the year before last, when DS2 sat the exam, the number of candidates for the CSSE test was around 3800 - 4000. From the fact that the main session was declared fully booked before the closing date this time, one might surmise that the number this time was greater. The CSSE people are usually very helpful and would probably tell you at least a rough figure if you asked them.

As for the Redbridge 11+, I'm afraid I have no idea. However much we might have liked our DC to sit for Ilford or Woodford (or not, really - either would be a pig of a journey from here), we are not in the catchment area and are therefore they would not have been able to do so. You could try ringing the LEA or one of the schools?

year by year competition is more lastyear woodford and Chelmsford have increased seats but
still the ratio remain the same as more number of children appearing for exam.

I dont think it's quite that simple. More children are taking the exams, but more children seem to be sitting multiple exams than they were a few years ago. These children will only take up one place. So knowing that eg. 600 children sat for 120 places is not hugely helpful as you do not know how many of the 600 will actually apply (some may have used the exam as a "free mock") and also how many have another school as their first choice. In the past you only sat the exam for schools you had applied for on your CAF, since it changed a few years ago so that results are known before you apply, many more families are trying multiple exams and then deciding where to apply once the results are known.
Part of the problem the CSSE had with exam spaces (particularly for girls) is presumably caused by Chelmsford pulling out of the CSSE exam. All in catchment Chelmsford girls I know, sat the Chelmsford exam as well as the CSSE so that increases the number of exam takers at Colchester and Southend.
