Assisted Places at King Edwards High School

Post by Sutton Parent »

Can anyone help please as to what criteria they use to offer assisted places?

We are on a very low income so completed a form which contained all the financial information for an assisted place - however, we are told "assisted place not available". (Unfortuanley we are unable to afford full fees so our daughter is very disappointed - we could been celebrating yesterday but instead had a gloomy day - but we cant see a way out.)

Many thanks

Hi

The KEHS 'Assisted Places' scheme was replaced by the Governors Remission "Bursary" Scheme from Sept 2007. This is a very generous scheme that is identical to the KES arrangement. Quote from the letter we received at the time;-
The governors Remission Scheme is designed to give an opportunity not to all who fall into this range of incomes, but to the most able. As you can imagine there are not enough funds to provide for everone. We will use the finite resouces to provide for the most able.
It's actually very tough to pass the KEHS enterance exam - there are only 78 places and several hundred apply. So you daughter has done exceptionally well to get through - most don't. Unfortunately it's even harder to get a Assisted Place Bursary.

We were in the same situation and have been paying full fees for a number of yeasr now. Having said that - this is a great school.

Hope this helps.

I would endorse what Ken says. The available funding, although very generous compared to a lot of similar schools, is simply not sufficient to provide for all boys and girls who pass the entrance exam but fall within the income limits which are covered by the bursary scheme. Has your daughter also applied to the KE grammar schools, which of course are free to all who pass? Many children who have the choice actually prefer the grammar schools, probably not least because they know that they are not causing a financial burden to their parents. Don't let her become depressed - I am sure that a girl who can pass the entrance test to KEHS will have a good chance of a grammar school place in March.

agree with ken and kes parent, your daughter sounds very bright and if has passed the kehs exam will undoubtedly have a great chance at passing the KEGs exams

good luck

ps. to those in the know when do we receive the KEs results - I thought they were posted on the 22nd , but was hoping to hear if successful securing scholarship before. If We haven't heard does that mean no scholarship?

mm2,
Still waiting, 22nd/23rd not too far away now! We also wondered, if those successful with scholarships would be notified earlier? Does anyone know?
Yours nervously, kegsmom 2. :?

Hi Kegs Mom

still waiting here aswell.
was wondering same thing about scholarships.
It's amazing isn't it that time can make you run thru so many scenarios.
Started out so nervous thinking such a long time till the 22nd , then had the phone call which mentioned sponsorship.
Suddenly felt so much better thinking at least now he will be offered a place.
Now fretting, maybe They have changed their minds .

Oh God , let the waiting be over

good luck

Hi mm2,
Good Luck to your son too! We have not heard anything since the interview. Your telephone call re sponsorship sounds most promising
It's really strange how the time post the Kes interview seems to be an eternity, when in reality, it is nothing compared to the mammoth haul to 4th March!
Oh well, it's all decided now, not too long to wait. Regardless of the outcome, am still pleased that DS wanted to have a go and gave it his best! He, as the other boys seemed to, really enjoyed the interview, which in itself is excellent experience and must give them some confidence for whatever lies ahead!
Good luck to all!

Hi Kegs mom
you are absolutely right.
our boys have given it their best shot and I am proud regardless of the outcome.
I think they have done incredibly well to get an interview.

Which bodes well for the KEGS results, as i suspect that a lot of the boys at KES probably also sat the KEGS test.

Keeping everything crossed

Good luck
