Found a proper word coming in at 32 strokes:

籲 to appeal

56 doesn't seem so bad, that character was fairly symmetrical. But it's not a real word with meaning, how cruel :-)

Ah, also found a 48 stroke word:

龘 of walking dragons (!)
But that's really one character repeated 3 times together, so actually fairly easy.

It seems no one ever really learns the full "Chinese" alphabet as there always characters an individual will not have learnt and will never know.
