Scholarships

Post by Jeni »

My daughter is sitting the 11+ in 2016, she has an August birthday but gets on fine at school. She has a tutor so she can keep up with all her friends who are 10 already.

I have been trying to research sports scholarships for secondary as she is a talented swimmer and also a synchronised swimmer. I am having no luck in finding any information on any school that has sports scholarships.

Does anyone have any information.

It may lead to nothing as she may not be talented enough nor may I be able to afford the top up fees but I thought it would be worth a look.

Many thanks in advance

This thread may fare better on the Independent Schools section/forum of this site. Every school is different in what it is able to offer. As you have posted in Bexley and Bromley there could be any number of s schools you are thinking about but guessing it might be Bromley High if you have a DD then they do not have much in way of money to splash about but they do have sport scholarships. Be ready with the paperwork including letters of recommendation from sports teachers, coaches etc which for the independents need to usually be in around Autumn prior to the exams in early Jan. Also scholarships are usually only about 10% and a nod to a particular expertise to help cover travel costs, equipment etc. Bursaries can be more generous (maybe 50% but some schools have rare 100%) but will be means tested.

Speak to the bursar at the school and they are often happy to advise on levels expected.

And don't forget that the sport(s) need to be relevant to the school and they are looking for her to represent the school at that sport so it needs to be one that the school is active in. 10% is a typical amount, so the "top up" from that is quite a lot

Not sure where you are but if Kent area try looking at Sevenoaks School, Kent College Pembury and Combe Bank.

If interested in boarding then for a swimming scholarship you should consider Plymouth College. Four pupils at the time competed as swimmers in the 2012 London Olympics, including a 15-year old girl who won the gold medal for 100m breaststroke; also Tom Daley.
