New national curriculum commas in big numbers

Post by mystery »

School has said there are some new instructions and that in the 2016 ks2 test commas for the thousands etc should be used. Does anyone have a link please?

Here are the samples - I'll see what I can find:

There are NO commas in the large numbers in the mark scheme.

According to our new text books commas are out, there is a gap instead. I prefer commas.

In many countries, though, the comma is used where we use a 'dot' and a space is used where we put a comma. So '31,6' is what we would usually write as '31.6' and our '31,458' would be interpreted as a number a thousand times smaller than the writer intended

Commas are gone because of the European use of a comma for a decimal point.
When I worked in academic publishing 20 years ago there were no commas.

We had a Spanish girl in our year 5 class a while ago , it was very confusing suddenly coming across her book in a pile of marking, so I can see why it is just a space.

(Still like commas though!)

There were commas in the sample paper last summer but as they are archaic I assumed it was a mistake.

No new guidance then about use of commas or otherwise?
