preparation books

Post by Shwetakd »

Could someone please tell me what would be the recommended books for self preparation for the St. Pauls and CLSG for English and Math? We are familiar with the Bond books. But there are many publications, like Galore Park and Scholfield and Sims. Looking for some help here.

Scholfield and Sims are very good - I like their Mental Arithmetic series which is good for practising questions worded in the manner that children are not necessarily used to (depending on your DC's maths, you could start with book 4 or 5) and their 11+ series: 3 books for each of English and maths.

I'm not familiar with Galore Park, but I'm sure someone else will comment on those. I would imagine Bond maths would be too easy for the two schools you are considering; their English comprehension, on the other hand, is quite challenging from the 9-10 book up, but whether it could be of use or not, depends on the format of the comprehension tests your DC will sit - multiple choice or extended answers.

There is a thread on Bond English books here:

Thank you Purpleduck. Yes, My DD finds Bond math and their verbal reasoning very simple. We are preparing for SPGS, CLGS as well as Godolphin in Group 1 Consortium and Highgate School. All of these schools require extended answers and writing work.

You could try Barbara Walsh's verbal reasoning books and also Athey Educational practice test papers - they are definitely more challenging (rated 11+/12+ ) and available for maths, English, VR and NVR. Maths and English are standard format, VR both standard and MC. Have a look here:

Also, if you haven't seen it yet - Manchester Grammar School's past papers and answers are available to download from their website. They are really worth going through.
