Is Latin taught at Sutton Grammar?

Post by phantomguzzler »

Currently we have a place at Tiffin boys and I am debating whether to move him to Sutton Grammar (closer to home) if offered that option (on waiting list after initially not making the cut). I don't see latin mentioned anywhere on the Sutton site so am curious whether they do teach it and if not why not when it seems other grammar schools in the area are. Maybe they do teach it and its just not mentioned anywhere.

Don't know your area at all but in ours we have 2 grammars close together, one mixed and one all boys. The all boys my son attends does latin, but the mixed GS doesn't. I think that our boys school does because it goes up against (very successfully ) a local prestigious boys public school and as such it is appealing to that 'market' to offer latin - and I think its a wonderful way to maintain the traditional feeling of the school and the undoubted academic feel it has and succeeds in. Its a traditonal shape to a school that still works very well.

I suspect mixed grammars tend to feel that latin is old fashioned and they are more modern by not offering it - and indeed maybe the sort of parent/child who selects it is not in the least bothered about latin so there is no pressing for it.

Total surmise but wouldn't surprise me if its true.

I don't think they do - Latin is not mentioned on their curriculum page and not listed in the GCSE results for last few years.
It felt like I hit rock bottom; suddenly, there was knocking from beneath... (anon.)

Don't think they do, which is surprisingly as Glynn in Ewell definitely does. Boys joining from local preps e.g. Homefield and the Priory will have done Latin, so I don't know whether there is an external club or option of tutoring..

Hi PhantomGuzzler, my DS is year 7 in SGS and they don't study Latin. Many years ago, Latin was taught (I have a DS who started there in 1995 - he was taught Latin in Year 7 but more an appreciation of the Language - not to GCSE level). they study either French or German in yr7.

My DS is at Wilson's in year 9 and his year is the last to do Latin.Being able to give it up at the end of year eight made my son very happy!
Small number in his year are doing it to GCSE.

@Castlesinthesky " Don't think they do, which is surprisingly as Glynn in Ewell definitely does".

Wrong info about Glyn... Latin is NOT taught @ Glyn.
No Latin at Sutton Grammar either.

I stand corrected. They used to have a very strong Latin and Classics department. I think it must disappeared with the removal of the grammar stream. How time flies!!!

Whereas Tiffin does have a very strong Classics department with excellent teaching, and trips to Pompeii and other classical sites etc. We have been delighted with it. If you have strong feelings about your son studying Latin (and Greek), maybe stick with the Tiffin offer, phantom? It depends on how possible the journey is.

Boys in the last grammar stream at Glyn (it was abolished around 2010 for 2011) have not studied Latin. It must have been abolished some time ago.
Boys of the same age have not studied it at Sutton Grammar and it is only compulsory in Year 7 and 8 at Wilsons because they start GCSE options in Year 9 where Latin is optional but French or German is compulsory.
It is possible to live close to Sutton Grammar but still have an easy journey to Tiffins so, if Latin is going to be a deciding factor then it may be that you've already been allocated the best school for your son.
