Advice from those who completed SET 2015

Post by HSP2201 »

Please could any parents share any thoughts/advice on what the SET 2015 tests were like. I know they change often and Wallington is no longer doing a second stage test.

I know it's one maths and one English paper, both multiple choice. Does the English include comprehension and GPS or just all GPS? For Maths, is it similar to Level 5 and some Level 6 Maths?

A friend mentioned that her son did test 3 years ago and she made him learn/practice so much algebra/solving equations/KS3 maths and more but in the end, not much of this stuff came up in SET.

Feeling anxious as date fast approaching.....

Thank you for any advice/comments ...

You certainly won't be tested in ks3 maths. The maths should only cover the primary curriculum. U'm not sure if we are allowed to discuss format/content in detail but the English paper would usually have more than one comprehension and a cloze as well as vocabulary questions.

All the boys who sat it with ds, as well as ds himself, confirmed that there were two. Can't promise it will always be the case, but it has definitely been the case.

The comprehensions aren't as long as GL ones though, but overall came to around a third of the marks.

Thank you Ladymuck for sharing information.

Is it a general trend of one being factual and the other fiction ?

:x :? Thank you Ladymuck for your helpful advice. Just wondering of you could shed some light on how many question in English SET and also the maths paper so I can help my DD with timings?

A bit late now to help with timing for the SET.
Second stage is based on writing and unless they are instructed how long the writing needs to be, your child should concentrate on reading correctly the instructions and choose quality over quantity of writing.
Remember SPaG and use good vocabulary! Some years ago they had to write a persuasive letter to a friend asking for help saving an animal from a bad Zoo or something like that.
Good luck!
