Yes for Westcliff and Southend (ask schools or Southend Council for map) and no for KEGS for Colchester.

Just to qualify. There is a catchment area for 100 of the 144 places at Southend Boys and the same goes for Westcliff Boys. The other 44 places (88 in total) at the 2 boy’s grammars in Southend are open to all children in the UK.

Up until 2 years ago, every year, 4400 children (boys and girls) sat the 11+ in Essex. This has dropped to 3900 since the application changes introduced by the government. Under the old system, if you had a boy and applied to all 4 grammars in Essex (inc. Southend), your son would have need to come inside 500th to get Kegs, inside 700 to get the Royal grammar, 950 for Westclif Boys and 1200 for Southend Boys. If you lived within the Southend catchment area, the cut-offs are much lower. Approx 1800 - 2000 for Westcliff and Southend boys’ respectively. These figures are approximate and only intended to illustrate the comparative advantage to living within the Southend educational authority.
