Please help we are really in turmoil

Post by Troubled parent »

Everyone expected my daughter to pass.
We got the letter saying she had failed and we are all devastated, not least her.

The letter we recieved is wrong though.
It says she scored 511 and the pass mark was 513
But the seperate scores say
Verbal reasoning 105
Maths 100
Extended writing 105

If we double the scores for maths and extended writing that makes 515 and what should be a pass.

Can you ask for a re-mark of it as something is clearly wrong

Please help

Hi Troubled parent

there does seem to have been an issue with the letters sent out from Medway - it looks like either the VR or the EW scores are incorrect - it does seem however that the overall score is correct. I understand that Medway are aware and will be discussing it tomorrow morning and will be available by phone in the afternoon

ETA - there is some other posts here + the facebook comments

Hi Troubled parent, sorry to hear you are one of the ones caught up in this mess.

If you see my earlier post (http://www.elevenplusexams.co.uk/forum/ ... 22&t=48316" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) it appears that Medway have made some sort of mail merge error with the letters.

From the initial discussions on Facebook it seems that the duplicate score for VR & EW is a mistake. The total score on the email and letter are thought to be the correct scores.

Medway have responded on Facebook:
MEDWAY TEST: We understand some parents have concerns about their child's Medway Test results. We will be looking into this first thing tomorrow morning and will contact parents accordingly. Parents who would like to speak to the school admissions team can call 01634 333333 from 12 noon tomorrow (Monday, 3 October).

Thanks for your replies, hope is draining from us now :(
Does anyone know how we appeal for a re-mark as the score was so close to a pass?
We can only see the appeal that you submit the child's work from the last couple of terms

Thanks

Keep up hope, the mark is so close, should get in by appeal either into RGS or Chatham Girls. Hugs x

There has been an official response from Medway and it is as I had assumed. The total score is correct and the EW score is incorrect:
Medway Council says the total score and assessment published in Medway Test result letters are correct for all candidates.
It comes after concerns from some parents that some may have been sent the wrong scores.
A Medway Council spokesman said: "The total score and assessment outcomes published in Medway Test result letters is correct for all candidates, despite a publication error which led to the wrong extended writing score being printed in the letters to non-selective (non-grammar) pupils.
"We worked as a matter of urgency to look into the Medway Test results after a figure was incorrectly published on non-selective (non-grammar) result letters. While individual scores published for maths, verbal reasoning and extended writing papers did not add up to the total score, the total score stated and the assessment outcome in the results letter is correct.
"We have thoroughly rechecked the results and we will be re-issuing result letters today to those families affected with the correct figures, but this will not impact the total score or the assessment outcome for pupils.
"The deadline for review requests has been extended to 10am on Monday 10 October, to give parents more time to prepare in acknowledgement of any uncertainty this has caused over the weekend.
"We are sorry for the concern and confusion this may have caused parents at what is a very important time in their child's education.
"Parents who would like further clarification on their child’s results can contact their school directly."

Thanks for posting that, shevek.

Parents can of course calculate the correct EW score themselves by taking the total score given and then deducting the maths score x 2 and the VR score x1. The remainder is the EW score x 2.

Disastrously bad admin on the part of Medway Council, and they should hang their heads in shame that they didn't do at least some random cross-checking. It would have taken 5 minutes to spot that the letters all had two identical scores on them.
