Newstead//townley/dartford

Post by sobz70 »

Hi everyone,
I am thankful for the kind support and advice I have received on this forum.
With your help and my daughter's hard work- she has now passed all her exams.

Now filling the CAF form- Newstead is my first choice, but confused between Townley and Dartford for 2nd.
Any personal experiences of these three schools would be highly appreciated.
Thanks so much!

Hi, these are both good schools, it depends partly on travel journey, which is easier? Also your daughters preference I suppose?

My daughter is in year 13 at Townley and has had a very positive experience. I believe the school builds on each girls strengths. It is also very good with the less academic subjects allowing them to develop their creative skills. Having two specialisms, performing arts and Maths and computing you can see that there are very diverse opportunities for students. I don't have any knowledge wedge of Dartford so hopefully someone will post who has a some experience.

Good luck, we let our daughter choose her preference and it worked out well for her.

Thank you so much for your replies! My daughter is also a bit confused- she likes Townley because it has a wide curriculum- she wants to study latin/classical civilisation.
However she loves science so the specialisms of Dartford suit her better- she found Townley too arty for her.
We are both so confused!

We are faced with the same decision this year...

I see that you ultimately chose Newstead, and after the 1st month your daughter is happy. What tipped the decision in favour of Newstead?

We're 50/50 on either NW or TG depending on the weather... Whichever we put as 1 on CAF will discount the other.

Townley we've been able to see more of, including during a working day and can go and see again next week too. A neighbour's daughter also attends and is very happy. This assists in reassuring a TG decision.

Newstead is more of a mystery, with no opportunity to see it functioning. The open day was prior to results, and was extremely overcrowded. However, we don't want to discount it simply on rumours and a poorer open day experience.

Any additional guidance is much appreciated.. There are plenty of DDs at both who are happy and doing well. Flipping a coin or basing the decision on journey time seems like we'd have conducted insufficient due diligence and advised DD poorly.

Hi there! Yes ultimately we chose Newstead because my daughter liked it the most out of all the schools she visited. She prefers science and is less arty so NW was her choice, as well as the fact that she identified more with the girls there. Her best friend at primary also chose NW (she is also a sibling of NW student)
We spoke to the parents with DD's at NW and they highly praised it, the girls love it too.
Their curriculum is very wide- mandarin, Japanese, Latin. They also have dance and drama and art if you are interested in those subjects. They also do lots of enrichment activities like trips to Silicon Valley, India, Japan, Germany,France, Italy.
This excited us, also the fact that the school is small (my daughters form has 27 students)
We have lots of people we know with DD's at Townley but mostly because I think it's the nearest grammar to us. We also loved Townley when we visited but ultimately the other factors mentioned above tipped the favour towards NW. Also the fact that Lewis coaches started a route from our area to NW made the decision a no brainer!
Yes NW do not really promote themselves like other schools like Townley do. It's a shame as it's a great school as well! But ultimately it depends on your child and what she prefers! Goodluck with the decision! A great dilemma to have!
P.s you may still be able to phone Newstead and ask them for a tour during school hours if confused?

Thanks for your response, will respond on the other thread as this includes Dartford too but we are comparing NW & TG.

Hello, can somebody please help us with the choice of school between Townley and Dartford Grammar school for girls? We are not considering NW because of distance. DD is not a drama and music person and enjoys maths, although always scores better on English and verbal reasoning.
