When do you use BODMAS

Post by kemi »

Hi

I have a few maths questions that my son and his friends had different answers to. Some used BODMAS hence the difference. My question is when is BODMAS used? The questions are below:

7x - x + 9x =

4 + 3 x 7 =

8 + 28 ÷ 4 =

BODMAS would always be used. If the question needs a lower importance operator such as addition to be done first then brackets would be put round that part, otherwise it would be done after the higher importance operator.

In your examples:

7x - x + 9x = 15x addition and subtraction can be done in either order as the result would be the same

4 + 3 x 7 = 25 The multiplication would be done first

8 + 28 / 4 = 15 The division would be done first

Dear Wallasey

Thank you very much for your reply. Those were the answers my son got.

I'm sure he'll be pleased that he got them right.
