11+ trivia question

Post by Dad40 »

When did Bucks bring forward their main 12+ selection test to 11+? The 12+ was the standard transfer time during the late 1970's and 1980's.

And did this 12+ transfer time supersede an even earlier 11+ transfer time....in say the 1960's?

Off the top of my hat 1996 [will check for accuracy later]

My sister and I are in our 40s - she older than me. She did the Bucks 11+, I did the Bucks 12+.

Thanks both. Be interested in Patricia's more accurate answer when you get a chance to check.

Y, I'm 42 and I did the 12+...... and I was only ever aware of the 12+ at that time (pretty sure my older sister born in 1963 also did the 12+).......

Found this while surfing -

"In 1974 the age for secondary transfer in Buckinghamshire became 12"

taken from a document published by The Russell School, Chorleywood -

It changed to 12+ when the school leaving age raised in 1970s then it stayed at 12+ to 1999 or so when Secondary schools started taking Y7s. Even then it wan't straightforward and some schools in south Bucks took them before north Bucks did ...

In the early 1990s, it was still a 12+ exam.

Presumably 12+ is no longer an option (to me it would seem preferable to 11+)? 14+ as being adopted in NI - see below - probably even better!

Yes there is a 12+ for those not selected at 11 - several of us on here have children in Grammars through this route. However places at 12+ are not guaranteed and the popular schools are already full.

You can transfer at 13 and 14 - but again places are very rare.
