Yet another question for Patricia
Hi Patricia
We're really struggling with the word/number codes.
eg STAY YEAR REAL EARL
2965 7362 5964
He gets there in the end but it takes him a long, long time and he's not always accurate.
Can you recommend a good technique to deal with this question type.
Many thanks in advance

Hi
The problem with these questions is that the student sees words, not letters.
If you focus on the number positions and the letter positions it is reasonably easy to spot the patterns.
In your example
STAY YEAR REAL EARL
2965 7362 5964
The 9 and 6 are together in two of the number sets
and
The E and A are together in two of the letter sets
Therefore
A = 6
E = 9
By substituting this information you will have:
2965 = ?EA?
7362 = ??A?
5964 = ?EA?
The only word that has an A in third position withot an E in second position is STAY
Therefore
Y = 2
T = 3
S = 7
By substituting this information you will have
2965 = YEA?
7362 = STAY
5964 = ?EA?
You can now work out that 5964 must be REAL
Therefore
L = 4
R = 5
By substituting this information you will have
2965 = YEAR
7362 = STAY
5964 = REAL
You can now work out that EARL is 9654 which is the missing word/number
If you make a quick template of the numbers i.e.
2 3 4 5 6 7 9
Y T L R A S E
and insert the corresponding letter as you go it is easier to keep track.
Remember that with this type of question all the working out, and therefore time taken, is at the beginning of the question set. There are generally 3 or 4 questions based around the same information so once the code has been cracked answering the questions is very quick.
Hope this helps
Regards
Mike

Re: Yet another question for Patricia: Answer
Notice how all the first thee words all have the same third letter, A, and that the same applies for the three numbers. Hence A=6 and EARL is out.
YEAR and REAL have identical second and third letters hence the pair 2965 and 5964 corresponds to these two words, not necessarily in that order.
Hence STAY=7362, which means that Y=2, which means that YEAR is 2965 and therefore REAL is 5964.
The key is to look for identical letters and then find numbers with identical figures and the same positions.
It is actually good fun and an excellent exercise for the mind!
Once it is perceived like that you are on your way,
