Latymer sample paper Q32 - help please!

struggling to know how to approach this one

three fifths of my cattle are Jerseys; the rest are Herefords. Three quarters of my Jerseys are female, as are three eights of my Herefords

What fracrtion of my cattle are females?
what fraction of my male cattle are Herefords?

Any help from you maths whizzes much appreciated - daughter (and mum) struggles with fractions a bit so simple explanations would be good.

(b) what fraction of my male cattle are Herefords?

OK here goes -

three fifths are Jerseys and of these three quarters are female so female jersey cows are:

three fifths x three quarters = 3/5 x 3/4 = 9/20

for the Herefords
two fifths must be Herefords and we're told three eights of these are female:

2/5 x 3/8 = 6/40 = 3/20

so total females are 9/20 + 3/20 = 12/20 = 3/5

(b) if 3/5 of the herd are female 2/5 are male - so what fraction of these are Herefords?

of these male animals (3/5 x 1/4 = 3/20) are Jerseys and (2/5 x 5/8 = 5/20) are Herefords so 5/8 of the males are Herefords I think

Would you mind saying how to get a Latymer paper please? I seem to remember the school saying that they would send out a past paper if you sent them a Y5 report with your application, but haven't received one...! Bit late now anyway, but I'd appreciate a reply, thanks.

Hi there

we got the sample papers sent with the details for sitting the exam - they came with a letter and a card to take next Wednesaday when the exam is. If you didnt get that pack you probably need to chase it up as the letter is quite fierce about making sure you bring the card with you etc

I would offer to send you the papers but they're all scribbled on. All is can say is the maths is pretty hard - English not dissimilar to the one you can download from the Notting Hill and Ealing website

Thanks very much - we received the card and letter but not the paper: I have have now contacted the school and they are sending some today: better late than never! Thanks again for your help and good luck to your son or daughter in their exams.
