Barton Court Annexe

Post by DaddyOh »

Sounds like Barton court are jumping on the 'Grammar Annexe' bandwagon.

I think they'll have to be careful... too many schools jumping on the bandwagon and Gove may have no choice politically but to stop it before it's ever gotten underway!

It would be a little odd if an e petition in any town could result in a grammar annexe of a far away school. There could be little baby grammars being born all over the country.

There is definitely a need for a grammar school in the Herne Bay/Whitstable area so I can understand why this is planned. Far too many Herne Bay children can't get into their local grammar schools and end up having to get the train to Ramsgate or Broadstairs. The train leaves Herne Bay at 0730 and some children have to get on the bus just after 7 to get to the station, or I know of parents who have to drag their younger children to the station just to ensure the older child catches the train. This can mean they are travelling for nearly two hours to get to the school!

According to the local press and the Guardian, Barton Court intend to build a grammar school annexe in Herne Bay. However, Kent County Council are not in favour of the proposal as they feel the imminent extension of the school in Canterbury (which will provide an extra 30 places per year) will be sufficient provision to cope with the demand from those children from Herne Bay and Whitstable who wish to attend a grammar school.

It will be interesting to see if this proposal receives the approval of the Education Secretary who will have the final say on the matter.

Well, even if the DfE say yes, they're going to need KCC to pay the building costs according to the extract from an old newspaper article below. I'm not quite sure how KCC is paying for the annex in Sevenoaks let alone any other "grammar babies" that people fancy having at various Kent locations.

"Barton Court head teacher Kirstin Cardus said previous proposals to build a satellite school on the coast did not work because they were not viable.

She said a new school was needed because there were not enough grammar school places for students who pass the Kent Test, and no capacity to expand as more homes are built and the population increased.

Ms Cardus added: "All other plans for a coastal grammar have involved a satellite not a relocation. A relocation is a viable financial option.

"A satellite is not a financially viable option. We have no capital to build the new school unless we sell the current site.

"The developer is providing the land for free and is making up the shortfall in funding required to make this vision a reality. Without the developer's generosity this project would not happen.

"There is no capacity to expand the school on its current site and no site large enough has been found locally as an alternative.

"A developer as generous as Mark Quinn has not come forward either to donate the land for free and invest heavily in the new school in a city centre location. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for the school and its students."
