The Head Tutor at Slough 11 Plus Tutors is Balbinder Basi B.Edu (Southampton University). She is a passionate primary school teacher with over a decade of teaching experience, particularly in mathematics. Outside of school she has many years of tutoring for the 11 plus and is a specialist tutor in non-verbal reasoning but also caters for mathematics and verbal reasoning.

We carefully monitor progress of every child to ensure that no child is left behind and that they are happy. Any misconceptions are quickly identified and addressed.

The 11 plus exams can be quite traumatising for parents, especially for those sitting the exams for the first time. We appreciate the importance of the 11plus exams for all our parents and we offer advice and support to make the experience positive and stress free.

Our approach to the exams is to embed the necessary methods and techniques prevalent in each 11 plus discipline (verbal reasoning, mathematics, English and non-verbal reasoning) and then provide a thorough bank of proprietary questions (paper based and online) unique to our centre to enhance speed and accuracy.

Central to the whole 11plus process is the foundation of a strong vocabulary base and excellent mental arithmetic skills. We therefore monitor both from the outset.

Finally we also cover exam techniques to ensure the best possible chance of success.

Slough 11 Plus Tutors – Toolkit

We aim to make the 11plus courses as stimulating as possible and achieve this through a broad set of tools which include –

In a typical class we will cover up between two and three techniques across the subjects and during class worksheets will be used to ensure that the children have grasped the subject-matter. Homework will then be set, which will be both paper based and online. For the latter parents need to ensure that that their child will have internet access to the Slough 11+ Tutors platform.

Spot tests in metal arithmetic and vocabulary/spelling will take place every week.

Practice papers are introduced in the final few months of the exam preparation.

The intensive courses are a quick way for late joiners to get up to speed very quickly and also for home study parents to utilise before they embark on the 11plus or as a recap before the actual exams. Concessions will be applied to any existing student wishing to join the intensive courses for the purposes of revision.

The mock exams, separate from in-class practice papers (under timed conditions), form an integral part of the actual preparation and all parents are actively encouraged to attend this, where we open our doors to external candidates. It is useful form of benchmarking your child’s relative progress and performance.

We may on occasion ask your child to arrive early before a class if they have concerns with any of the homework or contents of the previous week’s class.

Slough 11Plus Tutor – Course Days

In common with many 11plus centres we would advocate that the optimal preparation begins in Year 4 and intensifies in Year 5. (Most of the actual grammar exams are sat in the first term of Year 6 and independent schools in the second term, usually January.)

Our Year 4 tuition takes place on Fridays from 4.00pm to 6.00pm and Saturdays from 4.00pm to 6.00pm.

Our Year 5 tuition takes place on Saturdays from 9.00am to 11.30am and 12.30pm to 3.00pm and on Sundays from 9.00am to 11.30am and 12.30pm to 3.00pm.

Our course and preparation continue right up to the actual exam dates with a final series of mock exams building up their confidence.

Slough 11Plus Tutors – Charges

We charge £36.00 per week (2 1/2 hours) and this includes all materials and access to the online question bank platform.

We also offer one-to-one tuition at our centre or your home where lessons are £30.00 per hour and again this would include all materials and access to the online question bank platform where necessary.

This structure of course is designed for children sitting any 11plus or independent school entrance exams where the GL/NFER have set the paper (typically verbal-reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, mathematics or English). Usually this implies most of the exams of the grammar schools in Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Bexley, Kent, North London etc. and the verbal reasoning paper of most of the independent schools.
