At Flying Start Tuition, we like to show that learning can be a real pleasure and how a slightly different approach can make a huge difference to the way a subject is viewed. Whether your child needs support in preparing for an 11+ test, independent schools’ exams or some help with English or Maths, our lessons will increase their confidence, boost their progress and let them stand tall.

Tuition

We provide dynamic, effective group courses and individual tuition in Verbal Reasoning, Non-Verbal Reasoning, English and Maths. Our courses are taught by highly skilled, experienced teachers and are supported by trained assistants so you can be sure your child will receive plenty of individual attention. All lessons take place at our tuition centre in Chesham, where we have fantastic facilities, including three classrooms, equipped with interactive whiteboards and a computer for each child.

11+ Tuition

The following courses are designed for children sitting the Buckinghamshire 11+, which comprises two verbal reasoning papers sat during the October in which a pupil is in Year 6. However, if your child is sitting the 11+ in another area or is taking entrance exams for independent schools we can tailor courses to suit your needs – please call us to discuss.

Our comprehensive 11+ programmes will teach your child all the techniques they need for 11+ success. We believe in working together with parents and we will help guide you and your child along their 11+ journey, from understanding the process, to preparing for the tests. We offer full-year or one-term courses for pupils in Year 5 and for those who wish to start earlier, our Year 3 and Year 4 11+ Foundation courses provide a more gradual approach.

Written and delivered by experienced teachers, our lessons use a unique blend of technology, interactive activities and traditional methods that boost confidence and motivate our pupils to achieve their potential. All our 11+ programmes also develop core literacy and numeracy skills, so whichever you choose, your child will reap the benefits in many other areas too.

11+ Courses 2011-12

Our 11+ courses run during term-time, Mondays to Thursdays and on Saturday mornings.

Year 5 Full Year Course – commences October 2011

Year 5 Short Course – commences April 2012

Year 3 11+ Foundation Course – commences September 2011

Year 4 11+ Foundation Course – commences September 2011

Summer courses

Verbal Reasoning Level 1 (V.R. 1)

This course is for children who have little or no experience of verbal reasoning. Suitable for pupils in Years Four or Five, it offers an introduction to the question types they will encounter in the Bucks 11+ tests, teaching them the necessary techniques to solve them. The course runs for 2.5 hours per day, over one week.

Verbal Reasoning Level 2 (V.R. 2)

This is a revision and exam practice course for children who have already learnt all the verbal reasoning techniques – perhaps during one of our term-time or VR1 courses. It is suitable for pupils in Year Five and is designed to improve speed and fine-tune techniques in all areas. There will be revision of all the different question types, together with vocabulary-building exercises, exam tips and practice of timed question papers. The course runs for 2.5 hours per day, over one week.

Mock 11+ Tests

Mock Test Days will be held in July and August, giving children the opportunity to sit a full 50-minute practice paper in exam conditions. Many children find this experience very helpful in preparing them for the big day and in alleviating exam nerves. Each session lasts for 1 hour 15 minutes to allow time for settling in and discussion of exam tips.

Students are welcome to sit as many mock tests as they wish, although we recommend they sit them on different days. It is a good idea to sit one or two tests early on and then further tests in subsequent weeks to monitor progress over the summer. For children attending more than one mock day, a different test will be given each time.

Following the mocks, the tests will be marked and scores given to parents confidentially together with feedback on any areas your child may need to work on.
