11 Plus Veteran Advice

Successful veteran of Eleven Plus (11+) Exams, Keshav Dutia, who succeeded in receiving many offers and has accepted a place for September 2004 at Queen Elizabeth's School for Boys in Barnet, has kindly submitted advice for Parents and Children.

The best Dos and Don'ts:

Dos For Parents

  1. Do encourage your child to do their best.
  2. Do explain mistakes after a test.
  3. Do show appreciation when your child does well.
  4. Do give your child a 5-10 minute break regularly.
  5. Do try and keep quiet when your child is working.

Don'ts For Parents

  1. Don't stay on the same subject everyday.
  2. Don't get angry on the child.
  3. Don't tell the child the answers.
  4. Don't keep the answers near the child.
  5. Don't put the child down.

Dos For Children

  1. Do try your best even if you don't know the answer.
  2. Do concentrate on your work.
  3. Do have fun, think of the test as a challenge and not a chore.
  4. Do ask for help when you are not sure of something when revising only!
  5. Do check your work after a test.
  6. Do eat a proper breakfast before an exam.

Don'ts For Children

  1. Don't get stressed if you can't get an answer.
  2. Don't get over excited or over confident.
  3. Don't cheat during mock tests because it won't help you in the real thing.
  4. Don't leave revision until the last minute.
  5. Don't eat chocolate before an exam.
