Re: Newspaper or magazine recommendations

My son used to enjoy Aquila - not a newspaper as such but has articles about all different interesting things around the world

Re: Starting GCSEs - what do you / your DC wish they'd known

DD found that one or two teachers really didn't seem to know what was covered in the spec (music and RE spring to mind, neither of whom came anywhere near covering the material) This was the first year of the new GCSEs so if i was being kind I might say that was why! So she would say print off and k...

Re: GCSE Sciences - online resources

DD used My GCSE science - we paid for access. You can print a sheet on which to take notes which she found very helpful (it would have the outline of the presentation and then she filled it in) and the exam style questions for each topic were also useful. She found that it went up to the highest gra...

Re: what forms parents need to complete for child going to u

We haven't paid the rent for either of ours - instead we gave them the money we had saved up for them (and a small amount of pocket money each month to make it closer to the full maintenance loan about) and then they have had to make the decision re how expensive accommodation they want to go for - ...

Re: Private primary v Private secondary

I think it is better to look at the schools in questions and pick the best pick for your children. My son started at a state primary, where he was very unhappy, so we moved him to a private primary (but not a pushy one - it was far more creative than the state schools around which suited him) He the...

Re: Choosing GCSE's

I don't think there is any advantage in taking more than 11! DD has 8 and got offers from all 5 universities she applied to - 4 Russell Group and 1 well respected in her subject. She also spoke to Oxford who said they were happy with 8 (but she didn't apply so will never know whether it would have w...

Re: online resource sites

DD found that the best resource out there was the my-gcsescience site. You can access the entry level for free so you can try it out before paying, but you have to subscribe for the higher levels. It covers OCR (and the other exam boards) but you choose the specific exam board you want to cover. It ...

Re: Choosing GCSE's

DD was grade 8 when she did music GCSE and it was the worst of all her subjects Part of the problem was a teacher who knew nothing about classical music, and there were no other classical musicians in the class This made the practical element really difficult, as one of the two performances is a gro...

Re: Science resources

That sounds just like my son in physics - often being told he didn't need to know the answer to questions he asked. He read a lot of physics books which weren't linked to the GCSE. The most annoying thing to him was whether light was a wave or a particle - in one bit of the spec it treated it as one...
