what are your tips please for effective planning? my DS dislikes spending much time...just puts 3 things and prefers to start writing straight away, but then a lot of ideas are repeated in his writing, he gets carried away an loses the point in his writing...please help with your strategies

Get him to write one thing in that 5 mins.
eg a brilliant starting paragraph, a description of a character, a setting

Provide a starting sentence and get him to carry on.

What sort of writing tasks are you referring to? can you provide helpful examples of what you are describing?

Not 5 minutes, more for planning stories, but a friend brought this back from a training.
Get him to look at well known stories eg The Billy Goats Gruff. Break it down into 5 stages, one for each finger on his hand.

Use that structure, one scene/event for each finger , then use your hand to keep reminding you of the structure of your story
You wiil need to spend a bit of timevloking at good stories, but they all have the same basic structure ehich he can adapt.
