Vocabulary Flash cards

Post by jcmum »

Hi,

Any suggestions on a good set of English vocabulary flash cards to boast revision of words?

Son does love to read but I think in addition to this vocab cards would help him too. Any recommendations as there seem to be quite a lot on the market?

Thanks.

I'm going i get the CGP set from Amazon. Don't know if it's good, but seems like a good starting point

A good way to boost vocabulary if your child already likes reading is to use a bookmark made from scrap paper and encourage them to write down words they don't know. It is not unusual that they can often read the word but don't truly understand the meaning. In the early days you can spot check words you think they are unlikely to know and may not have marked on their paper bookmark so they gradually learn the difference between reading and understanding. Vocabulary is so much better to learn when there is context in a story or factbook.

Another way is to respond when they are talking and encourage them to think up three alternative words for a word when it is common and ordinary and make conversation and observation fun. E.g they may say. 'what a warm day' - what other words are there for warm and then they think of tepid, heated, balmy etc and talk about how they may be similar but some may have a slightly different emphasis and you wouldn't describe a day as tepid but it is an alternative for warm so again they get the context.

Excellent ideas ^

We used to get the OUD e-mail with word for the day - they do it on Twitter now https://twitter.com/OED/status/1402868151566565376?s=20" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; - used to be fun trying to get it into conversation in the day
