Good mnemonics, but I prefer chants and rhymes. Try this one my DD came home from school with when she was in year 1 or 2. It really works. She used it to remember 8x8 is 64

"I ate and I ate until I was sick on the floor. So, eight times eight is sixty four".

I passed it onto some special year 10's I was teaching and they loved it. Grossness always helps.
