Not sure about how to do it for an English paper, but normally it goes:

<Your address centred across the top >

Ref

Date

Address

Dear Sir/Mr Smith

Yours faithfully/sincerely

I wasn't sure about denis denis's reply so I checked in my CGP Sats English book. It is 7 years old and CGP have been known to make the occasional mistake but they have :

Your address at right hand side slanting downwards with date beneath hopefully just next to edge of paper.

If it is formal letter, you then put on next line on left hand side the name and the address of the person with whom you are corresponding. You do not slant this.

Then Dear.....

Then RE: Whatever the issue is (underlined)

At end "Yours sincerely" if you've used the person's name in your Dear bit; otherwise "Yours faithfully" if you've just put sir or madam.

Hope this helps. It is also the way I was taught to set it out 40+ years ago.

For most KS2 letters I would definitely say top right hand side for address.

When typing a business letter then the top left corner, but thatis for ease of setting out and also teh address is then in teh right place for a window envelope, so that you don't have to address the envelope
