Comprehension questions

I have a few questions about comprehension test in standard format (non multiple choice ones)

- Should they be answered in a short phrase or is it required to write full sentences for answers. For example is it good enough: Q: What was robin hood carrying? A: sword.
- When asked for say three things about someone's character etc then are bullet points good enough or always complete sentences are required?
- When the question says find three evidences in the text, then what is best way to write it. Like three phrases in quotes from the text or add more information?
- When answering a question, do kids need to write all answers in their own words or just write using same words as question. For example is it good enough: Q: What was robin hood carrying? A: Robin Hood was carrying a sword.

A lot depends on how many marks the question is worth. A simple direct (complete statement) answer is good for a 1 mark question. But if the marks are more than 1 then they need to explain the "why" behind it.

Thanks. DS wants to write as little as possible and always argues that it is enough. I wish the amount of time, energy and explanation he has for such arguments, at least a fraction of it he would use in his answers as well.

Hi All

a little confused on the Writing Section of Comprehension .

when the Question says

DO Not include any new characters .heres an example in the link below .

http://www.godolphinandlatymer.com/_fil ... h_2008.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

so Question in the link above says

Continue the story from where the passage ends. just after Grace has fallen into the River. Do NOT introduce any New Characters .

MY question is should DD be Writing about only Grace here

as they have talked about 3 characters( Grace, Madeleine,Colin) in the actual Comprehension.

OR we can talk about Grace,Madeleine or Colin and NO one else outside of the Comprehension

Much appreciated .

I would say they are asking you to continue the story and can include Grace, Madeline and Colin, but no-one else i.e. no-one new.

The North London Consortium papers always follow the same format. It is always a continue the story creative writing task with no choice.

NEW characters are ones that are not in the story.

I know this story and this paper well as it is a good few years old now. The book and the passage are all about the relationship between the three characters and that is what the creative writing needs to be about. Your story needs to focus on the theme of the passage and continue it using the three characters and the interaction between them.

Marks are lost by many students who use rehearsed plots and characters that are nothing to do with the story. DG
