Any Tolkien fans here- I need help with a poem

Hi does anyone know what Tolkien meant by "flowering stars" in the poem "Far Over the Misty mountains"

On silver necklaces they strung
The flowering stars, on crowns they hung



I thought it was referring to diamonds....its a fascinating poem.
