Hi does anyone know what Tolkien meant by "flowering stars" in the poem "Far Over the Misty mountains"

On silver necklaces they strung
The flowering stars, on crowns they hung

I thought it was referring to diamonds....its a fascinating poem.

I always thought them to be a kind of mystical jewel, perhaps like diamonds but better
