Hi

My son is strong in the NVR and Maths areas but much weaker on his English particularly comprehension and punctuation.

Are there any good books that I could work through this with him?

Hi,

We are in the same boat and using the usual suspects in terms of books cgp and bond.

Have not found anything which is the magic button but a vocab results booster for the CEM by letts was suggested by a friend, we are still to get it and see if it has any impact.

Thanks

No magic book, but lots of reading :D . A cross section of genres, discussing unknown words and putting them into context.

Not sure on which area you will be sitting, but punctuation isn’t a big player in B’ham. Knowing the meaning of words and a text are, however, so read together and talk about what you have read. Look at inference as well.

Classic books have been life changing for me.

The impact of the books I read as a child and then was able to read and share with my children has stayed with me all my life.

The characters are like old friends.

My top Twenty would be:

1. Wind in the Willows
2. Just William
3. Anne of Green Gables
4. Tom Sawyer
5. The Secret Garden
6. A little Princess
7. Little Lord Fauntleroy
8. Tom's Midnight Garden
9. The Railway Children
10. The Call of the Wild
11. What Katy did.
12. Little Women
13. Huck Finn
14. Narnia
15. The War of the Worlds
16. The 39 Steps
17. A Christmas Carol
18. Great Expectations (for advanced DC)
19. Jane Eyre (for advanced DC)
20. Silas Marner (for advanced DC)

The link between reading at least some of these books and being able to tackle challenging comprehensions is absolute. DG

Memories are lovely but there are only about 11 weeks to go!!
The Ten Minute Tests are your best bet. Work through the comprehension and VR over the summer.
