If you don't want to move too far, Claire's Court in Maidenhead (private) has a good reputation. I know quite a few people who have been very happy with their child's progress and achievements there. I would say it is worth a look.

Whereabouts do you live OP? And do you rent or own? If your child is year 5 now and you rent it may be worth considering a hop-move if there is a particular backup non selective you want to ensure you are in cachement for (I am assuming your child is currently at a Langley primary)

Cachements in and around Slough can be very tight, there are also some criteria for certain schools eg St Joseph’s is Catholic non-selective near to Farnham Road.

Langley Academy is well thought of, though if you are not at a feeder school (Parlaunt Park or Langley Academy Primary) or a sibling, the cachement area is variable but as little as 0.5 miles (they allocate places in ability bands). They have high aspirations for their pupils and are currently Ofsted good with outstanding features (the on-site linked primary is Outsdanding)

Ditton Park Academy is a popular school near to the a4/Upton area, it has slightly “posher” parent reputation purely because it’s at the wealthier end of town and the cachement reflects that, some local parents I knew Aspired to it purely because it’s got new buildings, takes the kids from Castleview who don’t pass the 11 plus, and is close to Windsor geographically! Again the cachement area is small. Ofsted Good (I think).

Westgate School is over in Cippenham, Ofsted Outstanding and less than 0.6 mile cachement for non siblings i have friends with kids there who rave about it. You’d need to move over from Langley for any hope of a place.

Bayliss Court is girls only, in Slough Manor Park: but has drama/Dance specialist auditions for some places and the rest are by lottery not cachement, so you have a chance, bit of a trek to get there though! Ofsted outstanding.

Churchmead in Datchet (Ofsted Good) may not spring to mind, they are Church of England affiliated, but they do take some children from Langley and there is a school bus from Parlaunt Road each morning and Afternoon. It’s small and friends who’ve had kids there speak highly of its pastoral care.

So there are state options too! But there may not be guarantees.

Do bear in mind that because of all the exam tourists making it harder for locals to qualify, and hundreds children who are shipped into slough from MILES around, that the local non selectives are actually full of pretty able local children who could be decent grammar material but couldn’t pass the insanely overtutored/overprepped cohort they sit the exam against. So actually the “non selectives” are not as underachieving as you might think, and the schools are probably more balanced places for that.

Hope that helps.

A colleague of mine has one at Langley and one at Upton Court. The third one didn’t qualify and ended up at Ditton Park.

The fourth sat this time around and also didn’t qualify. However he is quietly pleased as he is really impressed with Ditton Park and is hoping the fourth will also go there. He said ‘I worry far less about the one at Ditton Park, than I have done with the other two.’
