Kendrick appeals?

Post by jillybean »

We currently live abroad and DD has just been assessed as in the 96th - 97th percentile for all kids following the US curriculum worldwide (through the MAP test) and with a Lexile reading score of over 1200. So we have little doubt that she is bright and keen. But for various reasons we don't think she is likely to get a high enough score to be offered a place by Kendrick for 2014 (jet-lag for the test, no experience of living or studying in UK, little and probably inadequate test practice from me).

If she doesn't get a place, I am minded to move on and just take up a place in our excellent local school when we return to the UK next year. As people on this forum say "cream will rise to the top" and I think she will do fine there.

But I would appreciate advice on whether it might be worth considering an appeal to Kendrick. Does anyone have a sense if appeals are ever successful there? Or would it just mean dragging on the experience to the bitter end, with no real hope of success?

If you go onto the Reading.gov website and look at the full downloadable booklet about each school and the admissions process, I think in there it gives numbers of appeals for the last few years. As far as I recall, none have been successful.

Sorry, sounds like you had a difficult situation to work around!

Time is on your side as you can't appeal until you've not been offered a place, so March 2014.

To the best of my knowledge no appeal has been successful in recent years.

Having been to appeal, last year, the school have a very strong argument based on three forms of 32 is the physical limit, and I broadly support that, however with hindsight there are some gaps in the schools arguments.

To win an appeal you will need outstanding academics, very strong mitigating circumstances and the knowledge to unlock the schools case and convince the panel. All in all a long shot.

But if you don't try you don't know!

Edit, cross posted with Aliportico.

Thanks for the advice.

I am increasingly thinking we will probably just draw a line under this if she is not offered a place - not only would there be the challenge of persuading a panel that Kendrick can somehow fit in more pupils, but also the fact that, however impressive her academic performance, it is not in the British system and so much more difficult for the panel to assess.
