Thank you Aethel , your explanation is I'm sure correct, it's just understanding it on this side is a bit limited....

Ok, here's a simpler version of the same thing:

It doesn't matter if the questions are "hard" or "easy".

All the kids sit the same exam.

The computer marks them, then shuffles them into a list by percentage marks.

And the 30% of kids with the highest scores "pass" (score 111 or greater)

The other 70% are "below the elegibility mark" (score 110 or less)

So if the exam was "easy" it just means everyone gets a higher percent, so you still have to beat 70% of the others to get that top-30% "pass" score.

I'm interested to know: are the different sections of the paper standardised individually, or is there just a grand total which is standardised at the end? So, for example, if a child missed a few questions on one section but scored very well on the others, would this affect the overall result as much as if it was a simple case of adding up the total marks scored?

Pretty certain, the total score (of all sections) is standardised at the end.
