Hi,

Is there any list of recommended books kids should read to increase their vocabulary and do better at 11 plus

No. There is no such list.

Read widely. It is better for the child to read lots of things they find interesting, in a range of genres, than all 250 Target Dr Who novelisations and nothing else.
Reading so called “classic” books (The Secret Garden, The Box Of Delights, Swallows And Amazons) will often introduce children to some more oesoteric words... it is worth getting them to have a dictionary in their room so they can look up anything unfamiliar.
Or get them a Kindle, which lets you tap a word and it has an inbuilt dictionary (not every child likes Kindles though).

Get books from the local library as then they can be changed often, and librarians can be good for recommendations as to something they will enjoy.

My son is not an avid reader of fiction (all factual stuff). I found the First Past The Post Vocabulary In Context excellent as it gave short, bite sized comprehension pieces from classical texts. He would never read a classical text so these were great.
