INFORMATION ABOUT THE TESTS

1. Verbal Reasoning: This test is based upon words and language. Girls have to select the correct answer to each question from a range of alternatives. Examples are given to help them work out how to approach individual questions. The questions within each section of the test are arranged in order of increasing difficulty. The hardest types of question are set towards the end of the test. The range of experience required to answer the questions has been made as broad as possible, and every effort has been made to give a contemporary flavour to the questions. Care has also been taken to eliminate items that could be biased towards one sex or the other.

2. Non-Verbal Reasoning: This test is based upon the ability to see relationships between things (particularly patterns, shapes, diagrams and numbers). It is a test of reasoning and the ability to discriminate details and manipulate information. It is not based primarily on ability in language, and therefore the two tests together give a more complete picture of a girl’s abilities. Examples are again given to help girls work out how to approach individual questions. The items within each section of the test are arranged in order of increasing difficulty.
These tests are written by the NFER (National Foundation for Educational Research) and are based on many years of research and trialling.
