Re: Halting all stress!
The minute one starts to lose the plot, WALK AWAY, diffuse the situation immediately, DC will have switched of by then anyway!
Last week should be left to fine tuning and going over the basics.
eg In maths, concentrate on those topics not covered in school by the time of the exam; in our case ratio/proportion and/or algebra (that is a personal preference, don't wish to start a separate debate on this, bored of this topic on this site), Data handling, reading speed/time graphs, converting from one unit to another, spring to mind
VR, should be practised till the cows come home, all the tips gleaned on this forum should be practiced such as mirror codes (how to spot the obvious pairs), Fibonacci,
NVR, now this is a special one, in most cases, this should come naturally, this is the closest to an IQ type test as there is. A bit of practice should earn an extra mark or 2, but it is a fundamental test of natural ability
Hope this helps and good luck.

Oopsy. Feeling a bit bad for calling Handsworth Grammar 'poor man's Grammar' . It's just from what I heard first hand from a parent, about the type of school it is, and that her son still wasn't happy two years later. I agree, it's probably a lot better than most comps. However, I think Hall Green Comp is not really that far off in Academic results. So for us, the 'comp down the road' is better than Handsworth Grammar which is miles away.
Sorry for upsetting anyone. The reality is though, Handsworth Grammar is probably over prescribed simply because it IS A GRAMMAR and, therefore, the only decent school in that area. It still doesn't change the fact that the school does have issues, compared to other Grammars.
Yes I agree with others here, I think the stress has got to me!!

i have found that most of us on this site are of a forgiving kind;

Hi
no_ball states that for VR, mirror codes & fibonacci should be tested- am I right in thinking this is solely for NON-KEGS exams?
Thanks

Yes,
The Birmingham consortium exams have not tested these VR types for many years.
For those who are fed up with going through this the first time, spare a thought for me the second time is much, much worse...and there are three more to go after this IA

Apologies for contacting you directly but I felt little similarities wrt the same concerns you expressed here so I thought of asking you few questions which is bogging me for long.anxious_mother wrote:Hi reeyah,
We live equidistant from BV and KE Aston. We donot have a decent comp. I'm afraid.
We were also thinking of moving to somewhere else if he doesn't get a place in grammar school.
let's see how things go.
I have twin sons who are going to take up grammar exams shortly but both are faring quite differently in their tution as well with my DIY and we fear the worst case scenario where a) one of them might qualify or b) both might get different places or c) worse still they do not qualify at all. In that case, our local comp is a very poor alternative and given a choice, we are ready to move to any place as my husband can manage with his work. So my question is, is it possible if we found out in march that we did not got any place, to move to a different locality where there is a likely chance of getting into a good local comp? When I say to any place, our choice is quite open so it could be solihul, sutton or even Northfield? Would the places not be filled up by that time from the kids who might have already put it in their LEA form? Btw we live in Handsworth area and deciding to wait till the end to fill our LEA form online, just to gain some time to make up our minds!
Also in the case of (a) or (b), do we get any chance of appealing as obviously we cannot able to send them to two different schools?
Can someone please give their impression on this as we tried unsuccessfully quite many a times on phone to reach Admissions at our local council?
Many Thanks

"Also in the case of (a) or (b), do we get any chance of appealing as obviously we cannot able to send them to two different schools? "
By all means you can appeal, but it is unlikely this appeal will be granted on the basis that you would like the twins to be in the same school.
I know of two sets of twins in different schools; one set has one in CH, one in FW, the other has one in CH and the other in a comprehensive.
I know twins may share a closer bond than siblings, but they can still attend different schools, just as siblings do. I am not sure if the argument that you'd like to have twins together, will elicit a lot of sympathy from appeals panels.
As for moving into a good catchment after March, if you move very close by you may move to the top of the waiting list, but have no guarantees of a place unfortunately.
Obviously good comprehensives will be full, so you would have to wait for the waiting list to move. You could try calling Solihull or Birmingham and asking, if this scenario had taken place last year, whether you would have gained a place.
Northfield?? Were you thinking of Kings Norton High or Turves Green ?
Perhaps you are thinking of Kings Norton and KN Girls, if you have girls?
