Each dog eats 2 tins in 6 days

Therefore 1/3 tin per day per dog

Hence 8 dogs in 5 days eat 8 x 1/3 x 5

= 40 / 3

=13 and 1/3 tins = 14 tins rounding up

(depends if the question says how many tins would they eat or how many would you need to buy to feed 8 dog for 5 days - note the catch for the latter - can't buy 1/3 tin!)

To begin work out how many tins one dog would eat in 6 days.
11 dogs eat 22 tins so 1 dog eats 2 tins
1 dog eats 2 tins in 6 days
1 dog eats 1 tin in 3 days
1 dog eats 1/3 tin in 1 day
8 dogs eat 8/3 tin in 1 day (2 whole tins and 2/3 of a tin)

So 8 dogs eat 8/3 times 5 = 40/3 tins in 5 days. 13 1/3 tins.

I hope that is clearer than mud, brain is still in tax return mode.

.....and here I was thinking I was the only one filing our tax returns today!

Yes, it is much clearer to keep counting in fractions right until the end.

thanx guys...both my hubby n I did the same thing ..him in decimals and me in fractions ...but DD insisted it was wrong as her "clever friend" had a whole number !

Phew ..threw me off more than tax returns ! Hmmm thinking of some of the bizzare things people claim expenses could start a whole new thread..............

Sorry FTM, I know we went off topic but I must gloat that just for once we are actually due a refund :D (without any 'creative' accounting).
