Post by KenR »

Updated with Sept 2013 exam content

Sept 2013 (for Sept 2014 Entry)
(with thanks to Turtlegirl)

Paper 1
1. 30 multiple choice synonyms taking 8 minutes. Words included illegible, tranquil, incision, subterranean (note: all from previous years - and parents had made a crib sheet of all the words on the KE list! ) (child said there was only one word they didn't know in the whole set.)
2. Picture stories - 3d shapes, but only a single level of blocks. They had to indicate an intermediate set of blocks to make a final shape. [Child a bit vague on this one!]
3. Problem solving. Including one about which hotel someone could stay in, given the price per night. And one about Susie Anna and Emily collecting bottle tops for charity - this was ratios (one child said it was very hard.)
4. Extra word sentences like the 2011 test. Words given jumbled up, including one too many to make a coherent sentence.

BREAK for 15 mins.

Paper 2
1. Cloze about a girl and her brother going to school. The boy got into trouble and his sister didn't help him!
2. A comprehension about muleteers.
3. Another comprehension about a fairground, giving the directions and placements of some of the attractions.
4. Non Verbal Reasoning - adding pictures together. (One child didn't manage to finish this off.)
5. Roundabout type algebra machines. 2 numbers inputted and a single number and x output. What is x? (One Child didn't manage to finish these - maybe getting tired!)

General comments "In general said the comprehension, Cloze and synonyms were easy (verbal stuff was child's strength) and thought some of the maths a bit hard"

Nov 2011 (for Sept 2012 Entry)

Notes: Exam was set by the Univerisity of Durham CEM - not clear if the paper was a new paper or the same as previous KE Foundation & B/Ham Consortium Papers

From the QM school web site below:
Places in Year 7 of the School from the first day of the Autumn Term 2012 will be awarded on the basis of the results in the three skill areas which
are tested: verbal reasoning (incorporating elements of English), non-verbal reasoning (incorporating elements of Maths) and numeracy. Raw scores
will be standardised to take account of differences in ages. An order of merit will be drawn up, based on the aggregate standardised marks in all
three skill areas.
It appears that all marks are consolidated and a single standardised score calculated. This is different to the approach used by the KE foundation and Warwickshire who also use Univ of Durham CEM
