Just trying to gauge the competition really

I am making an assumption that 100% will pretty much guarantee a place

However would like to know what % of entrants get

Above 90%

Or even

Above 95%

Is it a majority or a minority?

Anybody with thoughts from past experience or have the relevant stats at hand?

A raw score of around 70% will probably be sufficient to gain a place in any of the KE schools in Birmingham. To target a score of 95% in a CEM test might be slightly unrealistic.

I have copied some information posted by VZA regarding some of the past scores. And according to these statistics a child who scored a raw score of 85% in 2008 Warwickshire exam was ranked 1st in the whole exam. So it is an absolute myth that a child has to score nearly 90% to get into one of the KE schools.


The actual high scores achieved are not often reported but two that I know are:
QM Boys 2009 exam- raw score of 186 out of 227 (82%, ranked 4th) corresponding to standardised score of 131.
South War. 2008 exam- raw score of 85%, ranked 1st with standardised score of 142.

For CEM test a child needs to achieve a raw score of 60 to 65% or more to obtain a grammar school place. 55 to 60% will possibly achieve the waiting list and score of 80% or more will be the top or near the top. However, 60 to 65% in the CEM test does not compare to the scores children achieve at home or in a mock exam based on GL assessments practice papers or practice papers of similar difficulties. DD last year was scoring in the range of 86% to 92% at home (GL assessment practice papers packs 1 to 4) but only scored about 65% in the NGHS CEM test.

There are no CEM practice papers. But yes, they're harder, and more time pressured (so most won't finish everything, let alone have time to check answers), than the commercially available practice papers from other publishers.

Yes - they're looking for speed of thought, rather than the ability to apply taught methods. Tight timescales emphasises that aspect.
