Is that the usual number? Do we know the source of this figure?

Thank you very much umsusu, I was told by someone that there were over 12,000 and that moment was so stressing. The competition is fierce even thinking about the small chance of our children gaining a place.

I rang the consortium office and they said that 500 more kids entered this year.

Is it then possible to calculate the increase in points required for entry this year ? Is there a ratio we can work out to multiply the past scores by to try to approximate this years pass mark? Assuming all other factors are equal?

It's possible - but it relies on the assumption that the 500 extra were of the same standard as the original 4100. Which may well not be the case.

If we made that assumption what would the calculation be? ( this question will be on next years paper by the way !!)

Minicooper, you get all sorts of figures brandished about - sometimes it is just scaremongering but other times what you find is that someone simply adds up the number of candidates that have put a grammar somewhere on the CAF form : well when I finally get round to doing my form I could potentially put down 5 grammars - that is 5 applications but only one candidate.

12,000 is the total number of preferences that people have put on their forms, in 2011 there were 3500 people who put a grammar school as FIRST preference and it's that number that's closer to the actual number of grammar school applications.
