I was hoping someone could help me please with sats levels going into GS. If my ds gets a place at his chosen GS school, his sats level and results may be a problem. He's bottom set for maths and literacy and only a level 4b currently. He has a decent score, he is just careless and needs to pull his socks up for 6 months! Where should he be compared to other students and will this be an issue? Im a bit concerned he may struggle and i don't know enough about sats to judge. Any help or advice going forward for him much appreciated. Thank you

Level 4 means that you are only securing 50% of the marks available for the paper. I would suggest you download some papers and see what he is currently scoring on past papers. You have plenty of time, Sats are not until May. Does your chosen gs put students into sets in Year 7? DG

If he has passed the 11+ then he is obviously able. There are plenty of children who start grammar with level 4 in their KS2 assessment and a friend has assessed boys in the grammar where she works as level 3!

If you are concerned I would suggest you download some past papers.

Some schools use the Year 6 tests to set in year 7, but any decent school will assess for themselves. It may result in a low set initially.

Thank you, both posts very useful.

KE Grammars do not stream in year 7-9

I understand they ignore SATS totally as many of the intake come from the independent sector which usually don't take SATS

Allocation of children to classes at KEFW for example is done in a circular manner to ensure that there is an equal spead of abilities across all classes. e.g best performing pupil goes into class A, next best into class B etc. The only exception being where you might end up with more than 1 child from the same primary school in the same class. They try to split children up wherever possible so that everyone starts from a level playing field regarding friendship groups.

In terms of personal targets, the result in the 11+ exams along MidYIS assessments taken in the first 2 weeks of Year-7 are used to set targets. SATS are not used.

MidYIS assessments
Why would a GS use this? It's not well regarded ...

Most schools use FFT (Fischer Family Trust) to look at probability of outcomes at GCSE.

KEA certainly set for maths but I can't recall when they do this (visited too many schools!). I thought it was fairly early on though - didn't think to ask how this was determined. I was told that they initally use the 11+ results to set targets at the KE GS.

All the comps I visited taught in forms until Christmas of Year 7 and then streamed according to their own assessments. I get the impression that SATs only matter for the primary school league tables.

So I don't need to worry too much if he gets into GS about sats. I'm going to do past sats with him this year now though incase he doesn't. Won't do any harm he doesn't get much homework at all and we are used to working together from the 11 plus. Can only help for may!
