Unfortunately there are a fair number of people I know who do look at tables in isolation. I remember the last two times I went through the 11+, I asked a few mums which schools they were considering and it was always the same answer I.e the one at the top of the league tables even though they hadn't bothered to visit on an Open Day.

Yes schools will employ whatever methods they need to get to the top of the table, but that's because they know that for some parents it will be all they look at. For a truly useful table, then all schools have to be disclosing the same information in the same way and that's clearly not the case hence the difference GSCE v IGCSE and Alevel v IB which will affect reporting and therefore interpretation. The fact that the start of this thread has a question about the apparent drop in percentage for some schools shows this. They can give you a rough idea but not much else.
